ABSTRACT

The terms subnetwork and internetwork are also not all that precisely used in the industry. For the purposes of this discussion, a subnetwork is defined as a collection of network resources that can be reached without needing to go through a router. If a message has to pass through a router to go from one end station to another, those two end stations are on differing subnetworks. And an internetwork is defined as a collection of two or more subnetworks connected using routers. This relationship is depicted in Exhibit 20-1.
