ABSTRACT

There are several significant technological developments and societal phenomena that have impacted the network designer’s world over the past few years. PCs have proliferated and LANs have become as common and as essential as telephone networks. A growth rate of 100 to 200 percent per year of workstations per network is not uncommon. Rapid and sometimes instantaneous growth of businesses through acquisitions and mergers has resulted in a dramatic increase in the requirement to interconnect — often among widely dispersed geographical areas.
