ABSTRACT

This chapter examines and discusses methods of router access in both general and specific terms. The discussion of router access in general terms will be applicable to products manufactured by different vendors. However, for specific methods of access and methods one can use to secure access to a router, specific details applicable to routers manufactured by Cisco Systems will be used to supplement the generalizations. The selection of the use of examples specific to routers manufactured by Cisco Systems is based on this vendor currently having approximately a 75 percent share of the market for routers. Although specific examples of methods to protect access to routers in this chapter will be oriented toward Cisco routers, most routers manufactured by other vendors include similar capabilities. If an organization uses routers manufactured by another vendor, one should check the vendor’s router manual for the access security functionality of that router. One should also check the specific commands supported by the router to facilitate one or more access security features for enabling, disabling, and protecting access to the device.
