ABSTRACT

Many eye diseases represent the interaction of the immune system with ocular or periocular tissues. A good knowledge of the immune system and its interaction with the eye is necessary to understand the several ocular and ocular adnexal inflammatory diseases. This chapter outlines the general principles of immunology, discusses specific ocular manifestations of the immune response, and finally considers immunologic processes in ocular infections. A full discussion of immunology is beyond the scope of this text and many excellent reviews exist (1,21,531-3).
