ABSTRACT

Our purpose in writing this book is to as semble current information on anesthetic toxicity that focuses on the clinically rele vant agents. This text will be especially useful to the experienced clinician who is interested in the side effects and interac tions of drugs in research studies, to the new comer to laboratory research in anesthe sia who needs guidelines for the conduct of animal studies, and to the anesthesiolo gist who is unfamiliar with the potential adverse effects of the anesthetics that are unrelated to the physiologic and pharma cologic effects of these agents. Several chapters indirectly address anesthetic tox icity issues and are included in the book to enhance an appreciation and understanding of the factors that affect toxicity and the ways in which the adverse effects of the an esthetics can be investigated and presented. This overview addresses general principles of toxicology that relate to studies of anes thetic toxicity.
