ABSTRACT
The early legal maxim “nemo tenetur seipsum accusare” (no man is bound to accuse himself) is often credited as the founding principle of our current right against selfincrimination. From a historical standpoint the maxim represents one aspect of the often competing systems of law enforcement: the accusatorial and the inquisitorial.
