ABSTRACT

The typology of glasshouse buildings originates from the desire for a peaceful and green neighbourhood in the overpopulated cities during the Industrial Revolution. The first iron glasshouse is the iron hothouse in Hohenheim near Stuttgart (Germany) dating back to 1789 (Kohlmaier & Von Sartory 1991). The evolution of glass and iron production techniques in the nineteenth century was essential for the development and spread of the glasshouses.
