ABSTRACT

Since independence, sports have played a significant and pivotal role in the building of Singapore as a nation. In the early years, the main objective was to create an awareness of the importance of sports participation. This was followed by the setting up of the Singapore Sports Council that was responsible for the promotion of mass sports, the introduction of sports training schemes, the set-up of sports medicine services and the creation of a master plan of sports facilities. The 80’s all saw a burgeoning of sports facilities with a “Sports for All” policy encouraging Singaporeans to participate in at least one sport to keep fit for life. In addition, a Sports Aid Fund was launched for assisting talented and deserving athletes.
