ABSTRACT

The English language is recognized all over the world as a communication tool for pilots and air-traffic controllers of international flights. Development of effective communication skills for nonnative English-speaking air-traffic controllers and pilots is of great importance to provide safety of international flights. The communication process for air-traffic controllers and pilots is not a simple way to convey the meaning of messages; these messages must be immediately transformed into actions. The work environment for air-traffic controllers is always stressful due to their responsibility for peoples’ lives and the time limits for making decisions and responses. Therefore, a training system must be designed for them in such a way that it will allow the development of psychophysiological features of personality such as emotional stability, a high degree of concentration, the ability to memorize and keep information in working memory, creativity, and decisiveness. The training must also take into the account the fact that nonnative English-speaking people communicate differently than native English-speaking people do. Thus, the training of future air-traffic controllers must not be a simple summarization of separate skills but rather an integrated system.
