ABSTRACT
The critical attention currently directed toward wetland ecosystems is not restricted to scientists. Rather, wetlands pose some of today’s most contentious, difficult, and politically sensitive environmental questions and rival tropical rain forests for priority on the world conservation agenda. Examples are examined to illustrate the two main themes which underpin the concern for wetlands worldwide: a rapidly diminishing resource base and a growing awareness of wetland values.
