ABSTRACT
This report should clarify the significance of masonry structures in Germany. It will be shown that masonry structures have a dominant position primarily in the residential construction sector. The historic development has been determined by the economic competition with other building materials and the increased demands by clients and the legislation. This led to a wide product range and a great variety of masonry construction types. However, research and development continues. More stringent requirements for thermal insulation and further reductions of the costs will lead to new inventions.
