ABSTRACT
Section 2 of this paper gives an overview of the no, excessive and continuing erosion criteria. The author and others (e.g. Bell et al 2002) have applied the no, excessive and continuing erosion criteria to the safety assessment of several dams in Australia and New Zealand. Section 3 discusses the lessons learnt in applying the criteria to these and other cases, and Section 4 includes a description of three of these cases. Based on the experience gained by these studies, a step by step procedure for assessing filters and transition zones of existing dams is proposed in Section 5.
