ABSTRACT
The workshop aims to define, so far as is practical, the mechanics of internal erosion and piping processes, the paths leading to failure by internal erosion and the time these processes take.
With such an improved understanding, we could approach the potential for internal erosion as a design process, investigating and analysing each step in the process aswewouldwhen designing other engineering structures. Isolating the components, internal erosion might occur in a dam if the following conditions were satisfied:
• Could sufficient water flow through the upstream shoulder materials to sustain an erosion process in the zone susceptible to erosion?
