ABSTRACT

So it is clear that supportiveness can be critical to well-being of the workforce; it can also be stated that the implications of getting this wrong can have serious impact upon the reliability and safety of an organizational system or its processes. But supportiveness can mean a lot more than social support, and can be related to commitment, trust and the psychological contract, amongst its many possible correlates. Consequently, the literature on supportiveness is diverse and varied. It includes the above issues and the work ethic, teamworking, organizational citizenship behaviours, expectations and aspirations, and may be seen in terms of theories of motivation, attribution, cognitive dissonance etc.
