ABSTRACT

Modelling of foundation behaviour is the main focus of many centrifuge studies. A wide range of foundations have been used in practical situations, including spread foundations, pile foundations and caissons. The construction sequence has relatively little influence on the behaviour of shallow foundations, while there a significant effect of installation method on deep foundation behaviour. The foundation problems which have been examined by centrifuge tests are identified as well as the problems which need experimental verification of theoretical analyses. Centrifuge model tests of shallow foundations on fine-grained soils are relatively more complicated than those using coarse-grained soils. When a layer of clay is weak, some type of soil improvement is generally used in order to increase the stability of foundations. Drainage conditions at the base of a foundation may need special attention for larger-scale models. A number of studies on piles subjected to axial cyclic loading have been performed related to the foundation of offshore structures.
