ABSTRACT

Like Janus, the two-faced Roman god of gates and doorways, blood substitutes can provide opposing means by which two apparently divergent issues in solid tumor therapy can be addressed: the improvement of tumor oxygenation to augment effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and the reduction of tumor blood flow, and thus oxygenation, to increase effectiveness of bioreductive hypoxic cytotoxins.
