ABSTRACT
Perfluorochemicals (PFCs) are chemically and biologically inert compounds composed primarily of fluorine-substituted hydrocarbons. These materials have been studied intensively over the past 15-20 years as the chemical bases for synthetic blood substitutes. The history and clinical significance of this effort has recently been reviewed by Spence (1).
