ABSTRACT

High Throughput Screening (HTS) is recognized as a key element in the drug discovery process. An increasing number of pharmaceuticals currently on the market and in development have had their origins in screening. Presently, many existing HTS programs are undergoing expansion and many new companies are initiating screening programs to discover novel pharmaceuticals. The goal of this chapter is to provide information for either designing a new HTS program or expanding an existing one. The primary focus will be on developing an integrated program. Where appropriate, we will attempt to present perspectives from both a large integrated pharmaceutical company and a small biotechnology company since issues that these two types of companies face in establishing an HTS program can vary. The types of issues that need to be addressed in planning and implementing an HTS program are summarized in Table 1.
