ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role of marine natural products in drug discovery screening, with emphasis on macroorganisms. The potential impact of marine natural products as a discovery basis for high throughput screening is established with a historical perspective and a review of the biological activity of some known chemistry. Economic concerns are discussed with reference to high throughput screening programs that seek access to marine natural products libraries. The requirements for implementing an effective acquisition program are defined with special consideration for ecological impacts. Finally, methods for scale-up development that provide alternatives to large wildbiomass recollections are reviewed, including overviews of both existing and emerging technologies.
