ABSTRACT

II. BOTANY A. Anatomy and Morphology Tomato belongs to the genus Lycopersicon of the family Solanaceae. Bailey (3) classified tomatoes as belonging to two species: L. pimpinellifolium and L. esculentum. The latter species is the parent of commercial tomatoes, and practically all belong to the variety Commune. Other varieties included in this species are Grandifolium, the large-leafed or potato-leafed type, Validum, the upright or dwarf type, with dense, dark green foliage; Cerasiforme, the cherrylike type, with normally two-celled globular fruits and standard foliage; and Pyriforme, with pearlike or oblong fruits and standard foliage. In addition to these two species, Taylor (4) recognized several more species of tomato such as L. cheesemanii, L. pemvianum, L. hirsutum, and L. glandulosum (Table 2).
