ABSTRACT

On the basis of these experimental results, the wavelength sensitivity of photodegradation of collagen has been studied with monochromatic radiation by UV-visible spectral and FTIR measurements. By analyzing the UV spectra of photoirradiated collagen and collagen containing vitamin E, the increase in absorbance at 280 nm (L10D280) showed specified behavior against the wavelengths of irradiation. The increase in this absorbance is attributed to the increase in the tyrosine fraction in collagen. On addition of vitamin E to collagen, the formation of tyrosine is suppressed in the wavelength region of 275-305 and 350-380 nm, as shown in Fig. 19.
