ABSTRACT

College athletic facilities are also competing for ‘market share’ attention. This attention enhances the general undergraduate athletic programs and can help finance new campus facilities. Major college (American) football teams cannot command the same new facilities of their professional sport counterparts. Consequently, many colleges must accept their existing facilities, and renovate or rehabilitate their structures to provide a modern ambiance for college athletic events. In the past, renovation and rehabilitation has often been undertaken without considering repair or maintenance of the primary structural system. Repair work on a stadium facility does not sell any seats: amenities in the facility such as skyboxes, improved seating, and concessions are the revenue sources. Accordingly, maintenance funds do not readily exist to repair older stadiums.
