ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION The reasons for the impetus in stadia construction, particularly in the UK, are well known. The disaster at Hillsborough in 1989 and the Taylor Report that followed triggered a massive review and financial investment in places of large public assembly such as stadia. The largest expenditure has been on football stadia but there have also been major developments for other sporting venues such as rugby, cricket and horseracing.
