ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION The HOK Sports Facilities Group is the largest architectural practice in the world whose efforts are devoted exclusively to the design of new and renovation of existing stadia and indoor multi-purpose arenas. Since its founding in 1983, HOK Sport has been responsible for the design of 350 sports projects seating more than three million spectators. Projects currently under contract include the renovation of the Toulouse Stadium in France, in preparation for this summer’s World Cup, design consultant to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Stadium and Arena, and renovation of Lancaster Park in New Zealand. Previous projects designed and constructed in the UK include: indoor arenas in Sheffield and Birmingham, the design of Manchester’s Olympic Stadium used for the 2000 Olympic and 2002 Commonwealth Games Bids and the National Cycling Centre, an indoor velodrome also in Manchester. Needless to say our projects contain large amounts of concrete, both insitu and precast. The volume of the concrete in the 42,000 seat Jacobs Field Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio is 50,000 cubic metres.
