ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Given the requirement for more stringent safety standards since the publication in January 1990 of Lord Justice Taylor’s report on the Hillsborough stadium disaster, there have been numerous proposals to build state-of-the-art stadia in the United Kingdom. As well as the safety requirements, such projects have also been promoted given the increased demand to attend many sporting events in comfort and safety and the desire for stadia to be multi purpose in order to increase the use of the facility and hence boost revenue. Along with all the traditional structural, architectural, quantity surveyor, mechanical and electrical engineering services there has become an increasing need for the services of an acoustic consultant to advise the design team on the inter-related sound, noise and acoustic issues which can have fundamental effects on the planning, design and operational use of a venue.
