ABSTRACT

The practice of tightening bolts to yield has proven adequate in preventing bolt loosening. Connecting rod and bearing cap bolts in automotive engines are good examples. If bolts do loosen, then the use of locking methods is warranted. A change in design of the joint may be necessary to reduce the loosening effect. Reducing the transverse load on the bolted joint can also be very effective. Many methods of locking bolts are available as well as locking nuts. The method chosen depends on the type of joint and the severity of the loosening forces [4].
