calculated from the Boussinesq or Westergaard theories as explained in Chapter 6. If the thickness of the clay stratum is too large, the stratum may be divided into layers of

smaller thickness not exceeding 3 m. The net change in pressure~ at the middle of each layer will have to be calculated. Consolidation tests will have to be completed on samples taken from the middle of each of the strata and the corresponding compression indices will have to be determined.
