13.9 METHODS OF COMPUTIN°G SETTLEMENTS Many methods are available for computing elastic (immediate) and consolidation settlements. Only those methods that are of practical interest are discussed here. The' various methods discussed in this chapter are the following:
1. Elastic settlement based on the theory of elasticity 2. Janbu et aI., (1956) method of determining settlement under an undrained condition. 3. Schmertmann's method of calculating settlement in granular soils by using CPT values.
