ABSTRACT

Multimedia VLSIs demand high-performance as well as low-power consumption [1]. Fig. 24.1 shows the performance requirements for multimedia applications. Higher performance can cover more applications. For example, the MPEG2 decoder, which is the key multimedia function, needs more than 1000 million operations per second (MOPS). Thus, low-power design for multimedia VLSIs means low-power yet high-performance, which is different from the established low-power design techniques for calculators and watches.
