ABSTRACT

Due to reasons arising from historical phonology, there are two exceptions to the sonority sequencing principle in English phonotactics. We call these exceptions the adjunction rules. They are

• Adjunction rule 1: Segment /s/ may be adjoined to the beginning of an otherwise well-formed syllable onset. According to this, /sw/, /sj/, /s1/, /sm/, /sn/, /sp/, /st/, /sk/, /sh r/, /spj/, /spr/, /spl/, /stw/, /stj/, /str/, /skw/, /skj/, /skr/, and /skl/ can form a legal syllable onset while not strictly rising in sonority.
