ABSTRACT

When the physician is faced with chronic or recurring symptoms of nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, nasal itching and sneezing, a diagnosis of rhinitis is made. A number of classi fications for rhinitis have been proposed to assist in its diagnosis and treatment. But be cause rhinitis symptoms have a number of causes, some of which are not inflammatory at all, and because it is not always easy to determine the etiology and pathogenesis of the patient’s symptoms, the term rhinopathy was suggested to describe the various afflictions of the nose. Table 1 offers a practical guide for distinguishing the various chronic diseases of the nose. Table 2 lists treatment options for rhinitis.
