ABSTRACT

Figure 10 Transesterification of retinol with phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) catalyzed by the enzyme LRAT.

membrane fractions. the ester synthetase operates by a transesterifi~ cation route similar to that found in liver (36). The LRAT found the retinal pigment epithelium lecithin as substrate over other such as phosphatidylethanolamine or phosphatidylserine (31). Moreover, vitamin A-like compounds are preferred as substrates over other alcohols, n-dodccanol and cholesterol (31). However, within the vitamin A series, little preference is found with respect to stereochemistry or backbone substitution pattern (31).
