ABSTRACT

Production of shrimp in India is through capture and culture techniques. With its ever-increasing demand in the international market, shrimp has been given prime importance in the export-oriented seafood industries. Its demand in the world market has led to over exploitation of the natural shrimp stocks in many parts of the world, including the coastal waters of India. A decline in the capture fishery production of exportable varieties of shrimps due to over exploitation has led to the emergence of aquaculture as the only viable alternative source for sustaining and expanding the fish industry. Shrimp culture has emerged as a major frontier of modern aquaculture in recent years in India.
