ABSTRACT

Although L. anguillarum is regarded as the dominant species causing vibriosis, several other Vibrio species, are known pathogens. Typically, most Vibrio spp. are opportunists, causing infections in environments like hatcheries, or invading weakened hosts. Many are abundant in marine environments, associated with fish and other organisms. Many are also coral pathogens or bivalve pathogens. Vibrio harveyi is a major pathogen of shrimp (Thompson et al, 2004). Vibrio tapetis is a pathogen of many bivalves, causing Brown Ring Disease, but has also been isolated from halibut and corkwing wrasse (Paillard, 2004). Among other Vibrio spp. that may cause vibriosis are V fischeri, V ordalii, V pelagius, V splendidus, and V logei. An extensive review of pathogenic Vibrio spp. and their rapidly changing taxonomy is given by Thompson et al. (2004).
