ABSTRACT

Strong currents at marine net sites can be damaging to recently introduced smolt. Exertional muscle necrosis has been noted, and lesions such as myofibrillar necrosis, interfibrillar fibrosis, and regeneration of myotubes, can persist in the muscle for months. Furthermore, Rodger et al (1991) have suggested that Sudden Death Syndrome in farms with a history of Pancreas Disease (see elsewhere in this text), may relate to the effects of acute necrotizing exertional myopathy.
