This chapter reviews our efforts in demonstrating state-of-the-art, commer cial-grade performance from planar, batch-fabricable, high performance vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) for use in high speed data communication interconnects. It is clearly remarkable that VCSELs are already being offered commercially, when one considers that but a few years ago VCSELs were mainly research curiosities. We have concentrated on the flexibility of the established proton-implanted AlGaAs-based (emitting near 850 nm) technology platform focussing on a standard device structure.
