ABSTRACT

We start from the position that the APP molecule (and related members of the APP superfamily) will have many different activities, but for each APP gene product there will be only one primary function. Moreover, this function will be the same in neuronal and non-neuronal cells. This paper summarizes a number of activities, but it has to be admitted at the outset that the primary function of APP remains unknown. The structural map of APP and the APLP1 and 2 orthologs is shown in the Figure, and a summary of reported activities and corresponding proposed functions is presented in the table. The phylogenetic relationships of the APP superfamily has been presented elsewhere (Coulson et al., manuscript submitted).
