ABSTRACT

The cross-section strength can be checked also with the more conservative eqn (6.27). A value Al, = 3770 kN can be read from Fig. 7.4 for the eccentricity 220/3200 = 0.069 m. A value NI, = 4240 can similarly be read from Fig. 7.7b for the eccentricity 70/3200 = 0.022 m. The amount of Nu was computed to be 5670 kN in Fig. 7.4. These values in eqn (6.27) give:

1/Acy = 1/3770 + 1/4240 — 1/5670 for which N1

not adequately strong according to eqn (6.27). If that relationship were to govern the design, it is suggested that a larger steel shape be used, or else the longitudinal reinforcement be made larger. If the elliptical contour criterion of eqn (7.4) were accepted, the cross-section could be considered adequate.
