The use of discrete dampers to reduce the torsional response of structures to ear th quakes

The model used for the study is shown in Figure 1 and comprises a stick model with two lateral and one torsional degree of freedom at each floor level. Values of stiffness and mass used are representative of a framed reinforced concrete office building 30 metres square on plan and are shown in Table 1. This stage of the study is limited to the application of dampers at level 1 with the first storey constituting an isolation level corresponding to the introduction of lateral springing within the height of the first storey columns.
