ABSTRACT
Sustainability is a complex concept which is generally seen as human centred, long-term and involving interaction with natural systems. Many attempts have been made to define the term in the context of global issues (Brown et al., 1987; Liverman et al., 1988; Pearce and Turner, 1990), although O’Riordan warns of the dangers, describing its definition as an
“exploration into a tangled conceptual jungle where watchful eyes lurk at every bend” (O’Riordan, 1985).
