ABSTRACT

The ecological view regarding building materials, building products and buildings is gaining more and more importance. If design engineers are to be able to design for reuse and recycling, they need tools to compare different alternatives for construction elements. A survey of building materials and construction techniques and the ability of the building materials to be reused has to be undertaken before the recyclability of mineral building materials and building parts can be optimised. The separation of mortar and bricks/blocks during demolition of concrete or masonry constructions requires a lot of effort since a good bonding between mortar and brick is naturally an important criterion for the quality of the mortar. For future recycling of sand-lime bricks, it is recommended that a pure type separation of the demolition material is carried out in order to fulfil requirements for using demolished sand-lime masonry in the production of sand-lime bricks.
