ABSTRACT

The incorporation of integrated design principles into practical design is a fairly extensive process, in which not only is the work of structural engineers changing, but the co-operation between structural engineers, architects, building services system designers and other partners of construction and use also has to be developed. Designers are increasingly participating in product development of prefabricated structural systems and components, and in production of typed structural designs and details. New basic knowledge will be needed concerning materials and structures, especially as regards environmental burdens, hygrothermal behaviour, durability and service life of materials and structures in varying environments. Recycling design and technology demand further research in design systematics, recycling materials and structural engineering. The knowledge obtained will have to be put into practice through standards and practical guides. The concretising phase is often connected to specific building concepts of contractors and their suppliers.
