ABSTRACT

Ergonomics is just one of the fields where standards have been developed. In comparison to other fields, ergonomics standardization is relatively young: only some decades old, whereas technical fields like telecommunication, electrotechnology, mechanical engineering, and civil engineering have a standardization tradition of more than a century, and the origins of standards can be found many centuries before Christ in China, Mesopotamia, and Egypt. In those times, it was often the emperor who took the initiative. For example, the Chinese emperor Qing-Shihuang set compulsory standards on measurement, seeds, cloth sizes, and weaponry (Wen, 2004).
