ABSTRACT

H. Automated Acoustic Inspection Acoustic inspection refers to the analysis o f sound, noise, and/or vibration, pro duced by a system under test and acquired by an acoustic or by a vibration sensor. In mechanical engineering, the inspection is mainly applicable to the devices wi th rotating components, such as electrical motors, combustion engines, pumps, gears, compressors, etc., producing signals that can be analyzed and used for trouble shooting, on-line monitoring, or quality control. In some industries, such as in ceramics, porcelain, glass, brick, and tile, the quality o f products is analyzed by the sound reflected by the products. In this way, the structural inhomogenities, such as cracks or air bubbles, can be detected.
