ABSTRACT

Pollution of natural resources (air, soil, and water) is a concern for the public because of potential health effects. In the mid-twentieth century, Rachel Carson warned of the consequences of pollution of natural resources, which enlightened public awareness of the need for environmental protection (1). There were a number of pollution incidents in which human health was endangered. As an example, the Love Canal in New York was a site for disposal of chemical wastes for a period of over 30 years. Subsequent inhabitance of the site resulted in serious health problems in residents. Similar incidents were reported in other places in the United States, Europe, and Asia (2).
