ABSTRACT

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is one of the most potent nonproteinaceous toxins known, responsible for numerous fish poisonings. This toxin is one of the oldest known toxins, recorded as early as 2700 B.C. in Chinese literature describing the toxicity of puffers and around 2500 B.C. in Egyptian history in hieroglyphs depicting the fatal poisoning of a pharaoh who had eaten one of these fishes (1,2).
