ABSTRACT

Wood has been the subject of a considerable body of research, likely because it is the most widely utilized structural material. Since it is renewable it should be expected to maintain its position of importance in the future. Wood is dried subsequent to most applications to improve dimensional stability, mechanical properties, insulation value, resistance to insects and biological degradation, receptivity to finishes, and to lower transportation costs. In addition, the drying process itself is of interest from the standpoint of efficient utilization of energy.
