ABSTRACT

AcquiredTAntigen.Asmentionedpreviously,invivoT-transformedRBCsaremost commonlyencounteredinpatientswithfebrileinfections.RawlinsonandStratton(481)detected onlyonecasein10,000randomhospitalpatients,butBuskilaetal.(482)detectedT-transformed RBCsin55%ofaselectedgroupof238patientswithmalignanciesandsepsis.Lenzetal. (482)studied53adultsurgicalintensivecareunitpatientswithsepticemia.WhenusingA. hypogoeaandG.sojabydirectantiglobulintests(asusedbyBuskilaetal.[482]),4%ofthe patientswerefoundtohaveT-transformedRBCs,butwhenanantiglobulintestutilizingrabbit anti-A.hypogoeawasusedinaddition,32%ofthepatientshadreactiveRBCs.Serum neuraminidaseandserumhemoglobinwerefoundtobeelevatedin71%ofthepatientswith T-transformedRBCsand19and14%,respectively,ofpatientswithnoTtransformation.The authorsconcludedthatTtransformationofRBCsmaybeasignificantfactorinthehemolytic anemiaassociatedwithsevereinfection.Adamsetal.(484)studiedTtransformationin108 patientswithAIDS;7%ofpatientswithAIDSand3%ofpatientswithoutAIDShad T-transformedRBCs.TheauthorssuggestedthatTtransformationshouldbeconsideredinthe differentialdiagnosisofthehemolyticanemiaassociatedwithAIDS.
