ABSTRACT

Land degradation is the greatest impediment to agricultural sustainability in developing nations. In 1980, more than 3 × 106 ha of arable land were considered saline (Brinkman, 1980). This area has more than doubled in the past two decades. Salinization through mismanaged irrigation has destroyed civilizations and today contributes to international discord. While appropriate water management is crucial to avoid salinization and restore salinized soils, salt-tolerant crops can provide interim solutions to farmers in degraded landscapes.
