ABSTRACT

The Green Revolution of the 1970s resulted in remarkable increases in rice production. However, since then, the rate of production in most ricegrowing countries has slowed down (Hossain, 1994) and has now reached a plateau. Contributing factors include a higher population growth rate and the conversion of some highly productive rice lands for industrial and residential purposes. These developments pushed rice cultivation to less productive lands, including saline-and drought-prone areas.
